What is NLP?
NLP is the abbreviation for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It is about changing the way you think; it is not something you do by just thinking about it – it happens when you fully experience doing an activity by involving your body, mind, language and behaviour.
Neuro
Neuro refers to our nervous system, our neurology and our brain. It includes all of our senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting. We make sense of this information by representing it inside ourselves: we create pictures, hear sounds, and have feelings, smells and taste – all within our heads. We also have internal dialogues with ourselves; what we say to ourselves can limit or empower us. These internal representations form our model of the world; it is how we communicate to ourselves and others, how we explain what things mean and determines how we behave.
Linguistic
The language we use affects other people’s behaviour; it affects the state they are in and what they will do as a consequence; by knowing how to structure your communication you can get the results you desire.
Programming
The programming in NLP refers to our habits, our repeating patterns of thinking and behaving; these programmes run unconsciously. This programming is often passed onto us by parents, teachers and others. To change behaviour NLP uses trance states and hypnotic language to identify these unconscious programming patterns and to offer new programming behaviour that will enable participants to achieve their desired goals.
At the core of NLP is the truism that, by changing your attitude (belief system), you can achieve your goals.
